Located at the corner of Washington Street and South Street is arguably Vicksburg's most famous landmark, the shuttered Valley Department Store. It is not usually mentioned in the tourist brochures. Each year my Grandma Cleo Sansone would take me to the toy department on the fifth floor for the better part of an afternoon and let me pick out my birthday gift. As a teenager I made many last minute visits to the gift department on the first floor.
